TNR (Trap Neuter Release)

Trap, Neuter, Release (TNR) is a humane and effective approach to managing community and feral cat populations. Rather than removing cats from their environment, TNR involves safely trapping them, having them neutered or spayed by a vet, and then returning them to where they were found once they’ve recovered. This simple process stops the cycle of unwanted litters, reduces the behaviours associated with mating (such as fighting, roaming, and spraying), and leads to calmer, healthier colonies over time. TNR is widely recognised as one of the most compassionate and practical ways to control feral cat numbers, easing pressure on shelters and rescues while still respecting the cats’ right to live out their lives in familiar surroundings. With the support of volunteers and local communities, TNR offers a lasting solution that benefits both the cats and the people who care for them.

Roscrea SPCA runs a Trap, Neuter, Release (TNR) scheme to help manage the local feral cat population in a humane and caring way. We loan out traps free of charge to anyone looking to catch feral cats in their area, and we cover the cost of neutering each cat through our vet partners. While there’s no obligation, a small donation towards each cat’s care is always appreciated and helps us keep the scheme running for the community. Once neutered and recovered, every cat is brought back and released exactly where they were found, so they can continue living safely in their own familiar surroundings. It’s a simple, effective way to reduce unwanted litters and improve the lives of feral cats in Roscrea — and we’re always glad to help anyone who wants to get involved.
